Universities and industries should take advantage of the recently launched Two University Two Industry (2U2I) initiative to gain collaborations that lead to win-win outcomes. The purpose of 2U2I programme is to gather industry experts with academicians to provide learning experience for students so that by the time they graduate, all the attributes expected by the industry are met – all this leading to the increased employability among now-experienced graduates.

The 2U2I programme allows students to gain relevant exposure during their varsity years as they undergo 2 years of classroom learning and another 2 years of hands-on experience. With the exposure, students will gain an idea of the industry and some entrepreneurial skills while industries will be able to screen for fresh talent during the period. Certainly, 2U2I can be a good platform for them as they will be seeing and learning the realities of the marketplace. To-date, five universities nationwide will implement the 2U2I programme for one course at their respective universities including UniSZA and Universiti Putra Malaysia.

For employers who are looking for the cream of the crop among college-educated, entry-level employees, an internship program is the best way for them to build a pipeline of talented, young professionals. Ultimately, employers will benefit from an internship as it is considered as a low-risk and low-cost alternatives.

1. Obtain Fresh Perspective

Employers is able to capitalize more on the knowledge base that these students bring with them. Often, students bring with them a fresh, up-to-date academic background that when paired with the right industry can be valuable to the employer.

2. Enhancing Your Social Strategy

It’s no secret that Gen Y is more tech-savvy than any before. Take the opportunity to explain your social strategy to your interns and get their feedback. This provides young people the opportunity to incorporate what they’ve taught themselves about social media into the real world and their internship.

3. Mentorship Opportunities

An internship program provides an opportunity for current employers to connect with these college students, meet with them, speak with them, and ultimately – mentor them. This mentorship program will be helpful for your business’s culture as well as the student’s well-being and continued learning.

4. Develop a Talent Pipeline

Companies devote time and resources to find, select and train interns to look for a return on their investment. An internship is a great way to see how much a potential student has in the field by evaluation their skills and work ethic as an intern. The benefit might be in the present (using the services of talented individuals without having to make a hiring commitment), or it might be in the future (the added ability to choose a person who will work out well as an employee).

5. Gain Brand Advocates

Hiring an intern helps spread the word about your company—whether you mean to or not. If you’re an impressive internship employers and mentor, your interns will probably talk about their experience with peers, friends and family members, essentially advertising for your organization. Eventually it can be a valuable opportunity for employers to reach out to local colleges and universities and create valuable relationships for all parties involved.
